Independent Living: What It's All About

Independent Living embodies the agency's commitment of "creating opportunities for a good life." This service enables high-functioning clients the chance to live on their own and represents the driving motivation of the agency: to enable the clients who can, to move away from dependent funding and live their own, fulfilling life.

The ILP department is staffed with Community Support Specialists and a Manager who monitor the clients' progression in the program, offering help and guidance whenever needed, and, of course, tackling the necessary paperwork. Clients are responsible for their daily living, food preparation, and transit, appealing to their assigned CSS only for support, and teaching opportunities.

A major addition to the program has been the New Beginnings Transition House, a home recently purchased by Moore Center Services (across the street from the headquarters on Titus Avenue), which is used as starter apartment for clients not yet ready to make the full transition to independent living. This experience is bolstered by classes which teach about cooking, grocery shopping, money management, transportation, and other daily living skills and are open to all Moore Center clients.

Last but not least we are excited to announce a new program (as of yet unnamed) to assist clients who live at home with their families who dream of living independently in the future to accomplish that goal by helping them learn the many skills they need before they leave home.
